Finding A Home

Elizabeth’s P.O.V

Burnt Pumpkin pie. An hour in the car with the smell of burnt pumpkin pie in the air. A great way to start off Thanksgiving. Right now, Artie and I were in the car on our way to his brother’s house. And I knew one thing for sure. I was not going to be eating the pie. At all.

I looked out the window as the world went by in a blur of colors. It was kinda cool looking. “Are we there yet?” I asked for the hundredth time. Artie sighed. No, I didn't particularly care whether we were there or not, I just felt like being an annoying little kid. I was much worse when I was actually bored.

“It should just be a few more minutes.” He answered, looking at me in the rear view mirror.

“Cool.” I said, not really caring. I was more interested in meeting the rest of his family. Al was pretty cool, but Artie wasn't. Personally, I hoped the rest of his family were more like Al. Through, Artie had mentioned that it would only be his siblings there. But still, I wondered what they were like.

Soon, I felt the car turn and stop. I guess we were finally there. I didn't wait for Artie to get out before I leaped out of the car and ran up to the door. Artie grabbed the “pie” out of the car and joined me. He knocked on the door. There was a small pause before it opened. “Arthur!” The woman who opened the door smiled.

She looked fairly young, and she had blond hair. It was clipped back, through some strands were still lose. She also had a small cow-lick. Her bright blue eyes shone, through they dulled a bit when she saw the “pie”. “I see you brought a pie with you.” She said. Artie nodded.

“Yes, where should I put it?” He asked. The woman pointed.

“In the kitchen. Matthew should be in there, he’ll tell you exactly where to put it.” Artie nodded and walked inside, I slowly followed behind him. The woman looked at me. “Oh! Are you Elizabeth?” She asked, I silently nodded. She smiled. “I’m Nina.”

“H-hello.” I said, barely above a whisper. Once again, my shyness had decided to make an appearance.  Nina smiled at me and I smiled back a little. She seemed like a really nice lady. Was this Artie’s sister?

“Well, follow me out back, thats where we have the set-up.” She started walking, or it looked more like waddling, towards the back of the house and I followed. Nina opened the sliding doors and went into the back yard. I sighed in relief. The only person back there was Al. No, wait, there was also a kid running around.

I ran up to Al and jumped on his back. He turned his head and smiled at me, “Sup dudette?” He asked, “You make it here alright?”

I nodded, “Yeah. For the record, don't eat the pie.” He laughed and I jumped down.  Hr turned to Nina and laughed.

“You look huge!” He started laughing before getting hit in the face with a shoe and falling on his butt.

“You try being seven months pregnant!” Nina yelled, retrieving her shoe. The kid laughed and I stood there, trying to figure out what to do. Soon, another guy walked out and looked at the scene before laughing.

“You called her fat didn't you?” He asked Al who shook his head.

“No Matt, I called her huge. Difference.” He said, standing up only to have the shoe hit him in the face agian.

“No Al. There really isn't.” Nina said, retrieving her shoe for the second time. At this point, everyone was laughing, including me.

Al stood up, rubbing his face. “Ow.” After a minute, he started laughing with everyone. “Well, nothing's changed since we were kids, huh?” He smiled, and Nina and Matt nodded.

“Well, you know. Besides me marrying Matthew and being currently pregnant.”

Al nodded, “Speaking of, what are you going to name it?” Nina shrugged.

    “Who knows?” Al laughed.

    “Uh, shouldn't you?”

    “Nope.”

I smiled, ‘I think I like this girl already.’ I thought happily. At least I was happy until I got poked in the face. I turned and faced the other kid that was there. He had blue eyes and bushy eyebrows. Like everyone else there, he was blond. “What?” I asked. The boy smiled.

“I’m Peter! Who are you?” He asked, really cheerfully. I smiled evilly.

“I’m an evil demon overlord here to take over the world. But you can call me Elizabeth.” I held my hand out for him. For some reason, he didn't take it. Actually, he looked kind of scared. I rolled my eyes, “Chill out. I’m kidding.” He smiled and grabbed my hand, shaking it happily. ‘Well, he bounced back fast.’ I sighed.

“Hey Elizabeth! How old are you?” He asked happily.

“Eight.”

“Really?! I’m twelve!” I forced a smile.

“Good for you.” Peter laughed and smiled.

“Hey! Because I’m older that means I’m the boss of you, so lets be friends!”  I felt my twitch. But I smiled.

“Hey! Why don't we play a game?” I asked.

“Game? What game?” He replied happily.

“Hide and seek! I’ll count first, so you go hide!” I turned around and started counting, and heard him taking off. I smiled and turned around, walking over to Al.

“Hey!” I smiled, he looked around for a minute.

“Where’s Peter? I thought he was with you.” I shrugged.

“I dont know. He ran off.” I smiled, I’d go find him in a few minutes, but until then I’d enjoy the silence. At this point, Artie had come out and was walking toward us.

“Its been a while since we’ve all gotten together like this.” Everyone, but me of course, nodded.

“It really has.” Matt said. He was really quite.

“Well, I saw you, like,  a week ago, but  you're right. We haven't all gotten together since last Christmas.” Nina smiled. They kept talking for a minute before I got board. I turned and started walking away.

‘Might as well go find Peter.’ I thought moving into the house. It took me all of twenty seconds to spot his blond head peeking up from behind the couch. I sighed, he was really bad at this. I sighed. “Man, he wasn't outside. He’s really good at this!” I pretended to look around for him before peeking behind the couch. “Ah! I found you!” I said with fake surprise and happiness. He smiled happily.

“Now its your turn!” I faked a smile. If this where an anime, my evil aura would be showing.

“Okay!” I smiled and ran off when he started counting. If there was one thing I was good at, it was hiding. If I wanted, Peter would never find me. Somehow, I felt like I had to make-up for his bad spot.

My eyes darted as I ran and I quickly found a hiding spot. The bathtub. I got in and closed the curtain. I sat there bordley. If Peter’s seeking skills were anything like his hiding skills, I would be there a while.

I broadly played with my hair. It was starting to get kind of long. It was past my shoulders now, and you could barely tell that I had cut it myself anymore. I frowned. I really liked the fact that you could tell it was self cut. It really said something about me. That, and I really hated long hair. It always got in the way unless you put it up, and that was always a pain to do. So, instead of someone else cutting it for me, I cut it myself. That way, I always got the exact length I wanted.

I wasn't sure how long I sat there, but soon I could hear people calling my name. I stood up and smiled. “Game over.” I sang to myself walking back down the stairs. But, about two steps down, I changed my mind and jumped up on the banister. That is, only to be picked up and put back on the stairs. I looked up at Arite and stuck out my tongue. “Kill joy.”

He smiled, “Parent.”

“I dont see the difference.” I said, moving back down the stairs. ‘And you're not my parent.’ I added stubbornly at the end. Through, even in my head it didn't have as much force as it had before. I shook my head and made my way back to the backyard.

Peter ran up to me and pouted, “Where were you?” He asked, “I couldn't find you anywhere!” I smiled.

“Thats a secret.” I smiled as Artie walked past me.

“She was in the washroom.” He said sitting down at the table.

I huffed and sat down to, glaring at him. It was totally uncool to give out someones hiding spot. I perked up however when I saw all the food. My eyes skipped over the pie Artie had made, but everything else looked awesome!

Time skip!

I had almost forgotten that you could feel so sick, tired, and happy all at the same time. I was lying down on one couch, Al was on the other. Somehow, it had turned into a competition to see which one of us could eat more. Through, I think we both lost as we were now both nearly dead on the couch. Though, he did eat like twice as much as me if not more.

“Imma gonna die Al.” I said with some of my usual drama. Al just nodded. “But the turkey was awesome.” Again, Al nodded from the other couch.

Artie walked into the room, “Its time to go Elizabeth.” I nodded, standing up.

“Bye Al.” I rubbed my eyes. Al gave me a lazy wave and Artie smiled.

“Someone's tired.” I shook my head.

“Am not. I could run a marathon and still not be tired.” I argued, but I didn't protest to going home. I said good bye to everyone, and passed out as we pulled out of the driveway.

Arthur's P.O.V

I looked at Elizabeth in the rearview mirror. It hadn't taken her long to fall asleep. I smiled to myself. If there was one thing I was thankful for this year, it would have been meeting her. Even if she was annoying sometimes, stubborn all the time, and just all around goofy, she was probably one of the best things that had ever happened to me. She reminded me a lot of myself, and she obviously needed someone she could talk to, someone she could trust. And, I wanted to be that person for her because I didn't have someone like that.

I know its two days late, but Happy Turky day! You know, unless you dont live in America.....Anyways, what are you guys thankful for? For me, its the good friends I've made reccently, music,  books, writting, anime, and art. All of these have helped me thorugh a lot of hard stuff, and I may literly not be alive if it wasnt for them.
