Legacy
Nova vaguely recognized the name Kubota...She glanced around and muttered it under her breath. When she suddenly caught the owner of the name staring at her.It was that boy from class 1-B. The brother of that third year who yelled at her in the halls. She saw them together often, she was always met with a glare from the older and a grimace from the younger. Now here he was...Her opponent. Her eyes looked away and continued to nervously look at the Ballot. The match before hers was Iida vs Hatsume. Depending on who won both matches, she'd fight one of them. She took a deep breath. She didn't know a thing about her opponent. Nothing about his quirk or fighting style, she didn't even remember him from the calvary battle. It made her nervous. He was a complete wildcard. She chewed her thumbnail and the skin around it. Nerves swirling in her stomach. Not only that, but he probably knew exactly what her quirk was. She assumed he knew who her father was. At least his brother did. The memory of his words weeks ago still made her nervous. She was glad that since then, Shoji had always been close by. Practically guarding her.The first match of the first round was Midoriya vs Shinsou. A name she still remembered, with no face to go with it. There were several matches between his and Iida's. Then it was Nova's and then it was Uraraka Vs Bakugou's. That match made Nova sweat nervously. Sweet hyper Uraraka vs angry wild Bakugou? It felt... Unsettling. But Uraraka was strong and her quirk had many uses, even if Bakugou beat her. It wouldn't be done easily.⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘Nova sat beside Shoji towards the back of the stands. The first match was about to begin, everyone was chatting in excitement over their classmates matches, or their own.Nova's leg nervously jumped up and down as she thought of her own match. What if Abal Kubota had a quirk that completely countered Nova's own? What if he could destroy metal or something?! She felt sick, like she was gonna barf or something."You'll do fine." Shoji said suddenly, looking down at her as she hid her face in her hands and hair. As usual the red cloud of hair completely covered her head and shoulders."How do you know that?" She asked with a frown he couldn't see."Because I know you're very strong. And you use your quirk naturally, like it's an extension of your body." He explained. Nova glanced it."It is an extension of my body." She mumbled, looking up at him. He shrugged."You get my point.""LET ME HEAR SOME NOISEEEE!!" Mic's voice screamed through the speakers."Ah! It's startinggg!" Uraraka said, holding onto Iida's arm and frantically shaking the stiff boy back and forth. Not that he seemed to mind, staring forward with a serious expression. Nova almost laughed at the sight."Are you readyyyyy?!" He yelled again, hyping up the crowd. "Our first match is between the boy who's won every round so far! Give it up for Izuuuuuku Midoriya!!!" "Yay!! Go Deku!" Uraraka clapped. As did several of their classmates."You got this Midoriya!!" Kirishima cheered with a clinched fist."Against him is the only student from general studies to make it to the final round!!! The wild card; HITOSHI SHINSOU!!!"Nova peered down at the boy. She realized he was the boy she saved in the obstacle race. With messy purple hair and dark eyes set in determination. She did recognize him, not just from the race. But she had no idea how she knew him.The match began. Nova waited for Midoriya to engage his opponent. Attack and maybe even use his quirk to show it off. But he didn't. He ran a few steps forward and then stopped completely. Frozen. Nova could see on the screen how blank his eyes were.Suddenly Nova gasped lightly. Of course. This quirk... She remembered it, mind control. There was a boy in one of her old middle schools with the exact same quirk. That must be where she knew Shinsou from. She remembered he used to get picked on just as much as she did. All the students said his quirk was villainous. That it was perfect for a bad guy.Just like what they said to her. Although Shinsou did have friends if she remembered correctly. But he didn't seem to like them very much, they called his quirk cool and spoke about how he could get away with any crime he wanted too.Nova frowned. How did she not recognize him earlier? She felt bad. But in her defense she attended several middle schools... And saw several students, who didn't talk to her. So it was difficult to keep track of them.Midoriya turned and walked towards the line.Nova frowned sadly. Knowing Shinsou's quirk, and the fact that this was probably it for Midoriya. As far as she knew it was impossible to break out of his spell by yourself. He was two steps from the bounds. If he walked out he'd forfeit the match completely.Nova held her breath, waiting for the buzzer to sound. But it didn't, instead there was an explosion. His quirk... It activated and broke his fingers. Nova didn't know he could do that without moving. Without even having control of his mind. That seemed...Powerful.After that Midoriya didn't trigger Shinsou's brainwashing again. So they fought hand to hand. Midoriya obviously won, he was more experienced and trained than Shinsou. Midoriya overpowered him and body slammed him onto the ground outside the line. Though no one could hear any of Shinsou's words, the fight seemed to be heated."That was totally crazy!" Uraraka put a hand to her chest. "I thought he was actually going to walk out... I wonder how his quirk works.""I was quite worried for him. A quirk like that is extremely rare." Iida nodded with a thoughtful look.Nova looked down at her hands. What if Kubota had a quirk like that too? One she couldn't even fight against. She shivered at the thought of someone taking control of her own body. Making her do something against her will, having every cell and atom in her body betray her. She hated the idea. That's why she refused to do it herself. She promised herself that she'd never use her quirk to manipulate metal in someone's body. The idea felt unnatural. Wrong. Evil.It was something her father supposedly did. During his court cases no one with any metal implanted in their body could come in. Some people who have had bad injuries have metal pins in their bodies, not to mention people with natural quirk metal. They weren't supposed to come anywhere close to him.The idea of doing anything like that made her want to throw up in disgust with herself.⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘Nova was starting to get more and more anxious. Dread pooling her guts.Iida's match with Hatsume was beginning.Nova didn't know who she wanted to win. She was too out of it to even think about their match. She felt dazed. She didn't know if she could do this.Fighting someone... In front of a crowd? What if he hurt her? What if he beat her up in front of everyone? It sounded humiliating. But something else sounded worse... What if she beat him? What would the crowd think? Watching the daughter of Kurayami beat the crap out of some innocent boy? They'd boo her. They'd scream about how they hated her, how she didn't belong. How she was a monster, a villain. If she won by hurting him... Would she lose her new friends?Could she even call them friends yet?Shoji was her friend, that much she was certain of. But Uraraka and Midoriya and Hatsume had simply fought beside her once. Would their comradery fade out after this? Now that they didn't need her?She felt like panicking. Like everyone was looking at her. Hating her. She was working herself into this, she knew she was. It was all in her mind. They were watching the match. Not her.She felt their eyes, even if they weren't on her."Are you okay?" Shoji asked. For the hundredth time today."I'm fine I..." Nova took a calming breath and stood up on shaky legs. "I'm gonna go to the waiting room now..." She whispered. She needed to calm herself down. She needed to prepare for her match.⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘The silence of the hallway calmed Nova. She walked down it slowly. Taking in deep breaths. Iida's match seemed like it was going to last awhile. Hatsume wasn't joking when she called it her commercial.Nova tried to think of a strategy as she walked through the maze of halls. Following the signs towards her designated waiting room.Stay on the offensive. It's what she was best at.She could probably pull metal from the elements around the stage easily enough. She has noticed them earlier, the stands of the fire starters. Where they lit sparklers around the fighters. That should be enough metal for Nova to launch a quick attack. Pull him out of bounds, similarly to what Sero tried with Todoroki...Although it hadn't worked out very well for him.Nova shivered as she remembered the cold of Shoto's ice, even through it hadn't been directed at her. The attack had been so massive it climbed up a full wall of the stadium. What if Kobuta Abal had that type of power? She took another calming breath. She had to stop thinking like that. She had no idea who he was or what his quirk was. She had to focus on her own strengths-Nova screamed as she suddenly felt a hand grip her arm harshly. She struggled in panic, feeling a sharp pain in her arm. Almost like she had been stabbed by a large needle."Ah! Who-"She felt dizzy. She was gripped by her hair and practically thrown to the side. Nova heard voices, footsteps. There were multiple people in the hallway. If only she had heard the door to the empty room beside her open when she passed it.Maybe she could have saved herself.⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘⫘Iida's match lasted ten grueling minutes. After about four half his classmates stopped paying attention to his match."Whose match is next anyways?" Jirou yawned. Kirishima checked the ballot, it was printed out and taped to the wall of their stands so the students involved could better keep track of when they came on."Kurayami vs someone named Abal Kubota." He said."Finally, an interesting match." Kaminari groaned. "No offense, but so far the only interesting match was Todoroki's. And that's because the froze half the stadium.""Hey! You lost your match! I don't think you have right to be judgy about ours." Mina pointed out."He has a point though. Other than Iida and Kirishima's the matches so far have only really lasted a minute or two." Midoriya mumbled. "There hasn't been many matches evenly matched enough to last longer than that.""Thanks bro." Sero said sarcastically. The phrase 'nice try' still echoing mockingly in his mind."Either way. Kurayami is bound to be pretty cool right? I mean she's the strongest girl in our class." Denki shrugged."Hey!" Both Mina and Uraraka whined in unison."She's stronger than you too dumbass!" Mina argued."Yeah duh." He rolled his eyes. "I only said strongest girl because she's probably evenly matched with the other powerhouses like Bakugou and Todoroki.""Oh please! I could body her anyday. And I fucking will today, if she even makes it to our match." He snapped. The other students glanced at the ballot. He was right. If Nova and Bakugou beat their first two opponents they'd face off in the semi finals."Which she fucking better." He added under his breath. Glaring at the stupid display between Hatsume and Iida. "This festival is a joke. I can't wait for the real fights.""Rude." Mina mumbled. She had previously been very proud of her match against Aoyama. But now she heard every saying how all the matches were boring or whatever."Poor Iida..." Uraraka mumbled sadly. Watching the 'fight' playing out before them. Which consisted of Iida trying very hard to get Hatsume out of bounds, and Hatsume trying very little to fight and very hard to turn this into an infomercial."I'm sure he finds it embarrassing, but you have to acknowledge the power of the devices Hatsume has created. They're strong enough to hold up during all this and fast enough to keep up with Iida's quick movements. All while she herself doesn't have to pay much attention to operating them. They'd be very useful in the field, although who knows how they'd hold up against someone with an electricity or water quirk-""STOP FUCKING YAPPING DEKU!!" Bakugou snapped."Sorry Kacchan!" He yelped. He hadn't even truly realized he had said all that outloud. He looked down at his notebook and sketched what he could see of Hatsume's inventions. Suddenly the buzzer went off. Iida was panting in the center of the ring. With Hatsume stepping out of her own accord."Oh um... And it looks like Tenya Iida wins!" Mic said over the speakers. It sounded almost like even he had almost fallen asleep. "As usual we have five minutes before our next match!!! So wake up and get excited! Maybe grab an energy drink or two! Next up is Nova Kurayami from 1-A and Kubota Abal from 1-B!! Whose ready to see the rival classes go face to face once again?!"The crowd seemed to wake up this time. Cheering weakly through their boredom.Iida looked around. His face red in embarrassment. He stared at his image on the screen he had won... But nothing felt real.Just like the Calvary battle. He had given it his all but it hadn't mattered. The win was handed to him, like a participation award. It hadn't been earned. Not by him. He wished Hatsume had simply pushed him out of bounds, it would have allowed him some type of honor. He clinched his fists as he walked off the field. He wouldn't let this happen again.Next match he was going to win by his own strength...Or die trying.A/N: Art!😊
